You have decided this is the year you will read more. This year you will dive into your personal development and make massive changes. Go you! I believe you are going to get it done, but where to start?

Realizing readers are leaders, by consistently arming yourself with tools and information you can gradually make steps towards the you that you say you want to be. I was a naysayer and skeptic of all things “Self-Help” until very recently. Since reading Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis, my mind and heart have been opened to the personal development space.

I took full advantage of Audible’s end of year sale and bought a ton new personal development books that had been on my wish list or recommended to me.

This list is a combination of books I have read and loved, as well as some that are on my list for 2020:

The 5 Second Rule: Transform your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage by Mel Robbins – This is the most recent book I have read. Mel Robbins says you can change your life by making 5 second decisions every day. By counting backwards from 5 and without a second thought you can propel yourself into action. I found it works to help me be intentional about the things I truly want when I do not feel like doing it.

You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life – Loved this book. It Is all about calling those things that be not as though they are, which is a biblical principle. Jen Sincero talks about manifesting good into your life by mastering how you think and speak about what you want in the future. There is a lot of curse words, so if that bothers you then you may not want to read it but if you can “Eat the meat and spit out the bone” I think you will enjoy it.

You Are a Badass at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth by Jen Sincero – The title is intriguing enough, right? Piggybacking off of You Are A Badass Jen Sincero dives more in-depth into how she changed her life in business. She was broke and living in her friend’s garage and is now a New York Times best-selling author and coach to other writers.

You Are a Badass Every Day: How to Keep Your Motivation Strong, Your Vibe High, and Your Quest for Transformation Unstoppable by Jen Sincero– I have not read this yet, but definitely will and if it is anything like the two aforementioned books by Jen Sincero, I know I will love them. Definitely on my list for 2020.

ScreamFree Parenting, 10th Anniversary Revised Edition: How to Raise Amazing Adults by Learning to Pause More and React Less by Hal Runkel– This book is really parenting advice but I have found it helpful for being the type of parent I want to be and for raising independent adults. I found the technics help me become more centered and patient with my children.

Believe Bigger: Discover the Path to Your Life Purpose by Marshawn Evans Daniels– This book reads more like a memoir but it an interesting story about how Marshawn Evans Daniels turned her life around after a bad breakup.

Year of Yes: How to Dance It Out, Stand In the Sun and Be Your Own Person by Shonda Rhimes– This book is for the true introverts. Shonda Rhimes describes how she went from living life in her shell to coming out more and deciding to say yes to life. This change led her to weight-loss and other tremendous personal goals.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change by Stephen R. Convey – I have not read this yet but my sister-in-law Deanna and Rachel Hollis rave about it so that is all it takes for me to add it to my list for 2020.

The Greatest You: Face Reality, Release Negativity, and Live Your Purpose by Trent Shelton– This book was highly recommended by the ladies in a Facebook group I am apart of. I bought it during Audible’s sale. I am truly loving Trent Shelton’s podcast Straight Up so I am looking forward to listening to this audiobook.

The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth: Live Them and Reach Your Potential by John C. Maxwell by – Another recommendation from Rachel Hollis, she said it is an OG book. I know she attributes John C. Maxwell to a lot of her success and he is a mentor of hers.

Mindset: The New Psychology of Sucess by Carol S. Dweck – This recommendation comes from Dave Hollis. Dave describes himself as fixed mindset and says he has to use external motivators to get him going. I like that Dave says he never feels like doing the thing but he does it anyway. This is on my 2020 list. Dave Hollis also has a new book coming out in March that is available for preorder – Get Out Of Your Own Way: A Skeptic’s Guide To Growth and Fulfillment.

High Performance Habits: How Extraordinary People Become That Way by Brendan Buchard – I have not read this yet but I have listened to several podcast episodes with Brendan Buchard. He talks about setting up your personal environment for success of who you say you want to be.

Do Less: A Revolutionary Approach to Time and Energy Management for Busy Moms by Kate Northrup  – This book took some getting use to but I really enjoyed it. It is all about self-care and managing your energy. Kate Northup studied female energy and talks about how we can get more done by being more intentional about rest and doing less during downtime.

Take Control of Your Life: How to Silence Fear and Win the Mental Game– I really liked 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins and I am interested in more of her books. This is an audible exclusive audiobook.

Girl, Stop Apologizing: A Shame-free Plan for Embracing and Achieving Your Goals– Check out my full review of Girl, Stop Apologizing here: https://listenupandread.com/girl-stop-apologizing-by-rachel-hollis/

  1. Sounds like a great list! Interested in reading about the 5 second rule. Maxwell and Convey are great authors and those books are phenomenal.

  2. I intend to read these books in the upcoming year. One of my all time favorite books is “The Wisdom of Florence Scoval Shinn” and it is a collecting of her works. The catch all theme is what you think/speak about, you bring about. Thank you for this list!

  3. I definitely will be reading the Bad A books and the Trent Shelton. 2020 will be a year of growth for me for sure!!! Thanks for adding to my TBR list!
